What is an Animal Nursing Assistant?

This course was launched by BVNA in 1989. Over the years the course has been continually reviewed and updated to ensure it remains up-to-date and relevant to Veterinary Nursing. In September 2002, it was confirmed that the course had been accredited by the Qualification Curriculum Authority (QCA) and is now a nationally recognised qualification.

In 2002 the qualification also underwent a change of name, From Pre-Veterinary Nurse to its current name. The new name clearly identifies a new role within Veterinary Practice, the role of an Animal Nursing Assistant. This identity is also enhanced with the ANA badge, and the 'recognised' ANA uniform of burgundy and white.

ANA's work closely with the patients, helping care for them and work within a variety of veterinary practices, from small branches to large veterinary hospitals, playing a vital role of assisting the Veterinary Nurses, Veterinary Surgeons and practice staff.

The role of an Animal Nursing Assistant will incorporate assisting the nursing staff in all areas of the practice, from the theatre to radiography, will include general husbandry of a variety of species, and involvement in the day to day running of the practice including, reception duties, dealing with clients, assisting in the consulting rooms and preparation of the patients and the treatment areas.

This role is vital in ensuring the smooth running of the practice and the well being of the patients.

Andrea, former student qualified September 2011, said on receiving her distinction certificate " thanks SJS Training, I'm really pleased with my result. Thanks for delivering such a good course, cheers!!"
